What Emerald Isle does to a window
Emerald Isle is the west end of Bogue Banks, with the Atlantic on one side, Bogue Sound on the other and Bogue Inlet at the Point, and the glass takes salt from every direction. Oceanfront homes along Ocean Drive and Coast Guard Road dry a white film within a week of a cleaning, heaviest on a southwest wind in summer or a nor'easter in winter, and at the Point the salt comes off the inlet as well. On the sun side it bakes, and once it bakes it starts to etch. Blowing sand scratches the lower panes on windy afternoons.
Away from the dunes the salt eases but never stops. The homes on the sound-front and the canals at Lands End, Emerald Plantation and Dolphin Ridge take a damp haze every morning that leaves a gray film on the water side of the house, the live oaks and pines on the interior lots drop pollen each spring, and the boat traffic in the inlet keeps an exhaust film on anything facing the water. Vacation rentals turn over every week, which means sliders and porch glass get handled constantly and never see a proper cleaning.
